Carter Hugh Epperly was a fighter, a bright light, and a joyful presence in the Powhatan, Va., community. Born with a rare genetic condition and many medical challenges, Carter defied the odds from day one. He was nonverbal, but his 'talker' gave him a voice—and with that voice, Carter shared his wit, his humor, and his love of Disney, Christmas, basketball, and above all, life.
Through surgeries, therapies, and countless obstacles, Carter met each challenge with determination. He walked not once, but twice—proving doctors wrong again and again. He was a beloved teammate on the Powhatan Medford basketball team, cheered on by friends, teachers, and family.
Carter passed away in May 2024 at age 15, but his legacy continues. His organ donations saved lives, and his memory now supports students through this foundation created in his honor. Whether you knew Carter or are just learning about him, we invite you to be part of his story.
